CYO Banff 2012
The Calgary Youth Orchestra

The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO), at Mount Royal University Conservatory, is an internationally acclaimed ensemble of about 65 instrumental students between the ages of 14 and 24 and is one of Canada’s leading community youth orchestras. Members of this community-based orchestra include students of Mount Royal University, the University of Calgary, and junior and senior high schools from Calgary and surrounding communities. The CYO provides solid training in orchestral playing with professional coaching from some of the best local, national and international clinicians and conductors. Workshops with guest conductors and visiting orchestras are a regular feature of the program. The CYO performs a series of concerts throughout the year and participates in an annual Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in Banff.


From August 4 to 13, 2014, the Calgary Youth Orchestra will tour Germany, in celebration of Richard Strauss (150 years from his birth) and C.P.E. Bach (300 years from his birth)

The orchestra will perform concerts in Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich (exact locations and times TBA). The concert program is:

Richard Strauss: movement from Symphony No. 2

CPE Bach: Cello Concerto in Bb, first movement

Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2

Mendelssohn: 5th Symphony, Reformation, last movement (based on the hymn written by Martin Luther, A Mighty Fortress is Our God

J. S. Bach: English Suite No. 3

Erwin Schulhoff: Hot-Sonate, 4th movement (new arrangement for orchestra)

The orchestra will stay in Berlin for two nights, Leipzig for two nights, and Munich for three nights. Between concerts, the orchestra will visit many sites of cultural and historical importance, including:

Donations to the CYO Germany Tour fund will be gratefully accepted! The CYO Society is a registered charity, and is able to issue tax receipts.
