Frank Simpson Memorial Scholarship

The late Frank Simpson founded The Calgary Youth Orchestra in 1957 as the Calgary Junior Philharmonic School Orchestra. In 1965, the orchestra joined the Conservatory at Mount Royal University. When Mount Royal University moved to the present Lincoln Park Campus in 1973, the CYO moved along with the Conservatory. Frank Simpson was the founding Director and served from 1963-1984 as CYO's Conductor. He was rigorous in his teaching, yet managed to instill a love of orchestral music in all his protégés. A memorial fund set up upon his death now benefits current CYO members with this scholarship in his name.

One scholarship of $1,000 or two scholarships of $500 will be awarded to students who are leaving the orchestra at the end of the 2005/06 season.

The Frank Simpson Memorial Scholarship must be used to further the recipient's musical education by continuing musical studies at a Post-Secondary institution. Students applying for the scholarship must have been a member of the CYO for a minimum of two years.

The scholarship will be awarded to students who have made a significant contribution to the CYO. The awarding of the scholarship(s) will take into consideration some, but not necessarily all, of the following criteria:
• Dedication to the Orchestra
• Financial need
• Cost of proposed educational program
• Improvement as an orchestra member

One letter of application requesting consideration for all scholarships offered by the CYO Society is sufficient. However, in order to qualify for the Frank Simpson Memorial Scholarship, you must let the Scholarship Committee know you are leaving the orchestra at the end of this year. Please write a short explanation detailing how you plan to use the scholarship and include reasons why you think that you qualify for, or are deserving of, the scholarship. All applications will be discussed by a scholarship committee comprised of the President of the Society (Georgia McLaughlin), Scholarship Committeee Chair (Robin Young), Honorary Life Member and Director (John Thompson), Treasurer (Beverley Erickson), Orchestra Manager (Trudy Ross) and the Music Director (Edmond Agopian). The Committee will make its recommendation to the Board of the Society whose decision will be final.

Deadline for submission: Saturday, May 15, 2010

All scholarship winners will be notified at the final rehearsal of the orchestra in June.
